How does water creep up into plants? Let’s experiment.
Cut off the bottom of a piece of celery that has some leaves. Let the children examine the cut edge. Point out the straw-like circles on the cut edge that will soak up the water. Put the celery into a clear cup containing about an inch of water with a few drops of red food coloring. Get a second piece of celery and repeat with blue food coloring.
Set them aside and wait until the next day. Examine the celery…you can begin to see the color creeping in to the leaves. We love to look at it through a magnifying glass! Let it sit another day or two and see how much more color comes up in to the leaves.
Plants are amazing!
