For Elementary Age Children:
Start by playing the game “Simon Says”–except play it as “King Says” (make a simple crown for the king). After you have played the game for a few minutes, talk to the children about how it is fun to play like someone is in charge, but what if the person in charge told them what church they had to go to, didn’t let them have any choice in the rules, and acted like they couldn’t make good choices?
The colonies went to war against the king that was ruling them. The colonies won and declared that they were now in charge. Over time people from each colony got together and created the Constitution. The Constitution of the United Stated describes the way the government is set up to help us be safe and protected.
There are three parts of the government called branches. One branch is the executive branch which is the President of the United States. The second branch is the legislative branch. It contains the people we elect from our states that help make the rules. The third branch is the judicial branch. It is the one that has judges and courts that help protect the people.
Then make hats that looks like the hats they wore back when the United States was created.
Materials: copies of the hat, scissors, stapler, crayons
