Life as a mother can be completely exhausting. There are some mundane tasks that are very necessary and important to helping your family learn and grow. However, most moms feel weighed down at some point. I discovered early on a simple key to renewing myself:
Take 15 minutes to learn, create, or help…outside your usual tasks. Work on something that won’t get “undone” before morning. This simple adjustment to your routine will be an excellent and needed diversion. I’d suggest you find something that intrigues you and causes your mind to be engaged. Stay away from fiction books and web surfing (there is a time for those but not in this diversion)…make this diversion something that builds you as a person…one that makes you into more than you were. Then when you are finished, you will have learned or created or helped and you will feel refreshed. Here are a few ideas to show you the diversions I speak of:
Read from a biography or a non-fiction book
Study a new language
Write in a journal, write a letter, or write a kind note to a family member/friend
Learn to play a musical instrument
Create a photo journal or scrapbook
Organize your pictures
Write a poem or thought paper
Study your favorite subject
Collect family history stories and learn about the country your ancestors come from (related posts: Becoming Our Ancestors or Cereal Box Syndrome)
Sew, embroider, paint, or draw
Call a relative or a struggling friend
The list could go on forever….There is a very good chance that what intrigues me doesn’t intrigue you and that is completely fine. Look inside and ask yourself what you would love to learn or create. What kind of learning or small project would help you rediscover your zest of life? Who could you help by a small act of kindness?
Try adding a 15 minute diversion to your list today. It will surprise you the added vigor that learning, creating, and helping can give.
