Are your kids at the point where their schedules differ enough that set job charts aren’t working? Try having a versatile chart we call “Jobs by Number.” You create a list of all the regular jobs that need to happen at your house and assign each job a number. Here is an example:
Jobs by Number…….
- Water plants
- Dust family areas (upstairs)
- Vacuum family areas
- Sweep and mop by the front door
- Vacuum stairs
- Wipe off your bathroom sink and make sure the bathroom is picked up
- Clean the sink, mirror, and floor in your bathroom
- Clean the toilet and shower in your bathroom
- Fold and put away clothes
- Sort wash/ do wash
- 10 min Job Search (see Job Search)
- Sweep porches
- Put shoes away on garage porch
- Clean the clutter out of the car
- Wipe down the inside of the car
- Vacuum your bedroom
- Straighten bookshelf
- Wash your blinds
- Wash a window
- Dust the railing
- Wipe out window sills
- Clean out one of your drawers
- Change your sheets
- Work on Scouts/ Faith in God/ Duty to God
- Clean out pan cupboard
- Fold batch of towels
- Get trashes
- Water garden
- Wipe off deck furniture
- Sweep/mop deck
- Vacuum under fridge
- Wipe off mopboards
- Do piano flash cards
- Sweep kitchen
- Do the dishes
- Help Mom make dinner
- Make a snack
- Piano lesson
- Clean in the garage for 5 min
- Pull 50 weeds
- Pull 100 weeds
You slide each child’s daily chart into a sheet protector in a binder. Then you simply write the assigned “number” of the job to do on your child’s daily chart using a dry erase marker.
It is a bit of mystery what job #6 is as the child flips back to the main list of jobs included at the front of the binder. Here is a blank chart: blank weekly chart
This method helps us. I take a few moments each morning and look at our calendar. I can quickly see what needs to happen and what kind of jobs we can do with the time available. It also works well to prepare for the days ahead. A child may need to get their wash finished earlier than usual to get to a camp or you may have company coming and need to wash sheets. “The only thing constant is change” so make your job chart able to accept the changes that come with families!
