On the road again….! There is a rule in our family when we travel: no screen time or reading until after we answer “the question.”
Let me explain. We have a grab bag of questions in the console of our vehicle. One of the kids draws out a question and reads it to all of us. We each take a turn answering the question. It gives kids the chance to vocalize what they are thinking. In a social media age…it is nice to hear their voices and thoughts. The questions we ask are varied. It is always fun to to get the question: “If you could have any super power which one would you choose? Why?”
Another question I like is, “Which fiction book do you wish you could change? How would you change it?” It is interesting to see what bothers a child about a certain book. Listening to them lets you feel so much more than what they are saying.
Honestly, my kids grumble a little when the questions come out, but after a few minutes we have had a meaningful visit. It is a neat way to connect as a family. Once when my daughter was four, we got the question about which ancestor we would like to thank. She piped up and said she’d like to meet Vonda Lou (the great grandma she is named after). My heart skipped a beat to realize she was really understanding all that was going on. There is power in conversation.
Feel free to download our family questions and write some of your own. It will amaze you what goes on in your child’s mind. Here are a few more questions we recently added to our bag —family questions 2
